Did you know?
• Spiders are not insects because they have two body sections and eight legs. They are ARACHNIDS.
• Bugs are any order of insects with sucking mouth parts and forewings thickened toward the base like water bug. Any insect regarded as a pest like a bed bug, cockroaches, louse, tick, or flea.
• Entomologists are scientists who study insects. They examine fossils, grow colonies of insects in laboratories and enjoy nature hikes in order to study them in their natural environment.
• Although insects do not have a nose some male moths can detect a female mate many miles away through the use of their antennae which are used for tasting, hearing and smelling.
• The stings of bees and wasps are very painful and for some people can cause an allergic reaction. For this reason and for your own safety you should not collect bees or wasps.
• Butterflies emerge from a chrysalis while moths emerge from a pupa or cocoon.
• The periodical Cicada´s larvae nymph lives underground for up to 17 years before emerging as an adult.
• Many supermarkets and nature stores sell boxes or bags of "Lady Bugs" to their customers for control of insect garden pests. This is known as biological control.
• Only female mosquitoes bite. They usually bite people or animals in order to extract the blood needed for their egg laying process.
• Some people call Dragonflies "Darning Needles" as they believe the long abdomen can puncture like a needle. This, of course, is not true.
• The common housefly has a wing speed of 18,000 beats per minute.
• Some moths, adult Mayflies, do not have mouth parts at all. They live on the substances stored in their bodies.
• Some insects, such as bees, ants, and termites live in colonies with each insect having a special duty. These insects are referred to as "social insects".
